Noughties to Nineties

The aims of the project were to establish a cyber café style informal learning resource within Church Lane Community Centre and produce a partnership programme, delivering an innovative learning package from the centre.  The project was able to provide a range of training and support to meet need, offering progression routes to more formal learning as appropriate.

The project worked with three main organisations working together BPHA, Bedford College and the Church Lane Management Committee.  BPHA provided a range of ICT and other training and employment support programmes for low income/difficult to reach groups.  Bedford College provided Community Learning Opportunities, IAG and referral routes to formal training.  The other groups that helped with the project were Street Rangers, Phoenix Theatre Project, Over 50s Club, Neighbourhood Renewal Co-ordinator, Youth Action, Connexions and Adult Community Learning.

The project activities included:

  • Connexions drop in sessions to include Phoenix Theatre Trust workshop.
  • Adult Community Learning in partnership with BPHA providing "Stepping Stones" weekly on a Wednesday morning, informal learning IT and Art.
  • ACL providing IT and craft sessions on a Friday, weekly.
  • Adult Learners Week, BPHA, Silver Surfers and ACL providing a range of taster courses.
  • New Age Training providing a literacy and numeracy course.
  • Church Lane Management Committee running the Cyber Suite with free internet access 3 x 1/2 days per week.
  • BPHA's Neighbourhood Renewal Officer and Housing Officers holding a weekly drop in.
  • Scallywags Nursery providing ICT access to children at the pre-school.

Noughties to Nineties Project Leads receiving their award for recognition of the success of the project.

The outcome of the project was to engage the local community, resulting with over 30 users progressing onto further learning or training.  The project has generated better partnership working at the centre, which is now offering a wider variety of courses and an effective local training and learning resource.
