New Age Training Ltd has been undertaking the Project Learn TV, which has been delivered in partnership with Goldington Family Group in Bedford, Tavistock Asian Women's Group (TAWG) in Bedford and Christian Family Care (Manor Farm Family Group in Sandy). These organisations recruited their own learners for the project and provided the facilities for training and information, advice and guidance to take place. They also undertook activities with potential learners to identify training needs.
The NLDC (Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities) approached NAT with a view to produce an hour-long documentary style film that would explain their 12 community projects for the funding year 2005 to 2006. Project representatives had been given access to a DV camera and they filmed their individual projects, which included footage of the beneficiaries of this work. The project was delivered as a collaborative effort between NAT – who had the expertise in delivery and provision of IAG and Family/Community Groups who had expertise in bringing together members of the local community. NAT has worked with numerous voluntary and community sector organisations.
Learn TV's aims were to offer the ultimate training accessibility: learning sessions specially customised for our local communities, available on DVD and all further supported by tutor-led workshops, and formal information, advice and guidance sessions. The project intended to introduce new learners to the joys of learning, with the intention of identifying structured progression routes for participants.
Some members of these Family/Community Groups had not previously accessed training. For many, this was because of barriers to learning created during their school education. For others, language difficulties, location and family/work commitments made it difficult for them to access learning. By creating Learn TV and providing each Family/Community Group with its own TV and DVD equipment.
The main objectives of the Learn TV Project was to support voluntary sector organisations through capacity building activities and to record, edit and render a series of training and information DVDs on subjects likely to be of interest to the target audience. This project had three tier activities attached to its objectives:
· Production of DVDs.
· Delivery of sessions.
· Distribution of DVD/TV to the Centres.

New Age Training receiving their award for recognition of the success of the project.
Project Achievements
Learn TV provided an innovative and new means of engaging learners who might otherwise have been denied access to training. By providing DVDs containing many of the features of a tutor-led session, delivered by local tutors and customised to meet local needs, the project demonstrated that learning does not necessarily mean having to attend class. It allowed us to be creative and flexible enough to meet the needs of those people within the community most in need of education and training.
By taking learning out to Family/Community Groups, we engaged adults of all ages in the learning process. We consulted with the learners on the type of learning in which they wish to participate, thereby demonstrating that learning can be customer-driven. By making the learning user-friendly and by complementing it with the tutor-led sessions, we provided a human face to learning. The IAG sessions were built within the sessions aiming to engage an additional 20 people to formal learning (who would otherwise have not been engaged). We by far exceeded our targets on this. We managed to engage members of minority ethnic groups who might otherwise have been ostracised from learning activities.
The success of the project was measured in terms of : the number of people accessing learning; and the number of those learners who progress to additional learning opportunities have participated in this programme (e.g. ACL). The IAG session records and associated follow-up by NAT and Family/Community Groups will enable us to monitor our effectiveness in achieving these measures. Throughout the project, we undertook formal evaluation activity with learners, asking for their comments on the quality of the DVDs and associated tutor-led sessions. The creativity and flexible approach of the staff made it a vibrant project.
