Neighbourhood Learning in Family Groups

Family Groups work with women and their families to improve confidence, self esteem, health and social inclusion in the disadvantaged wards of Queens Park, Cauldwell, Kingsbrook and Kempston by training, employing and supporting local women to run six multicultural women’s support groups and crèches.  Groups are for women, of any age, with or without children.  They cater for women who for geographical, cultural, language and social reasons may not be reached by other provisions.  Groups meet during the day in term time.

The Neighbourhood Learning with Family Groups project is developing Family Groups capacity to increase the range of learning opportunities available to local women by identifying their training needs and culturally appropriate workshops, with on site crèches and bi-lingual support to facilitate their learning.  Courses are being offered at local accessible community venues.  IT sessions have also been run during normal weekly group sessions.

The project has worked well with good attendance of courses as Family Groups were able to publicise courses through our multi-cultural women's support groups and through them in the local community.  The courses offered: Anger Management, Lifesaver Babies and Children, Emergency Aid for Appointed Persons, Relate - Taking Charge of Your Life, Basic massage techniques, Storytelling For All, Bitesize IT sessions, Pocket Money for Parents and Child Protection.  A total of 83 people attended the learning opportunities, 50 of whom were women new to learning.  They came from a range of diverse backgrounds: White British, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Black African, Black Caribbean and European.  As hoped women have gained, through learning, confidence and self-esteem with several enrolling on other courses.
