The aim of this project was to deliver ICT provision ranging from basic to Level 2 standards to Deaf individuals in Bedfordshire and Luton which was achieved with 24 new learners.
The project was able to set up a computer suite at the Alban Neve Deaf Association in Luton. Which entailed installation of new windows, decoration, white board, re-carpeting, laptop computers, projector, etc. The courses were held in Luton and Bedford to reach the wider community to encourage enviornmental sustainability. The project was run in partnership with New Age Training using their Bedford premises.
Learners using laptop computers
The set up of the computer courses at the Deaf Centre had a great impact on the Deaf Community they felt happier and contributed more than they would have done in a normal hearing college. The course was run by a deaf tutor, which had a positive impact on the Deaf Community, enabling the learners to be motivated and encouraged with learning. The tutor used empirical teaching methods and compiled handouts for all students of screen dumps which enabled them to follow the class but also to have the same information to take home with them to enable further practice on the lessons taught. When necessary the students were given one to one support to give added support to those who had very limited keyboard skills.
The project also managed to set up a Cyber Cafe as an extra activity it had a positive impact on the deaf community. On the Cyber Cafe's evenings the tutor was available to trouble-shoot any laptop or computer problems that the Deaf community brought to the Centre.
The majority of the learners felt that the course had evoked them to achieve more and they were now able to implement what they had learnt into their job situations. The feedback from the deaf students was encouraging and several wished to continue further in learning computer skills.
