Early Years and Extended Services (EYES)

This wa a practical hands-on course primarily designed for people interested in working with young children. Each Step course runs for 20 hours at 2 hours per week and covers the basic curriculum and methods of teaching pre-school aged children. It was aimed at people wishing to progress to level 2 and 3 in childcare, education or social care. It also serve as a confidence builder to people who have not accessed any training in the UK to date. Students attended an additional 2 hour ESOL session each week where the focus was on developing childcare and educational language.
The aim of the project was to enable people from the Polish community to gain basic language and childcare skills to help them seek further training or work in educational settings within Bedfordshire. It was suitable for people of all ages (post 16) and those with a range of previous experience and qualifications. At the end of the course students received information, advice and guidance in further learning, accessing local basic skills courses and seeking employment.
The project's aims and objectives were:
1. To give Learners the confidence to work or volunteer potentially in a childcare environment but also in other sectors.
2. To enhance the employment prospects of Learners by giving them practical skills and teaching current educational practice.
3. To give Learners the motivation and support to progress to training for a level 2 qualification where appropriate.
4. To identify support for basic skills for Learners and appropriately signpost.
5. To increase the number of Polish people working within Bedfordshire specifically within the early years, educational or care sectors.
15 learners completed the course with the required attendance and completed workbooks. All completed voluntary placements at local settings.
