Investing in Communities 2007-08

The investing in communities funding supported 6 revenue projects and 1 capital project for 2007-08 year.  The IiC projects ranged from offering pre entry first steps and taster sessions through to professional training provision at level 3.

IiC piloted a task group which allowed all project leads/administrators to come together to share best practice, signpost learners and become aware of other interventions and project work through IiC as a whole.

Chris says: by piloting the task group during 07-08 year I’ve witnessed some excellent examples of partnership working between different projects and other IiC interventions such as Health Steps to Employment.  This forum provided an opportunity for partners to discuss with each other how their projects were progressing and through communication and close linkages some had successfully been able to refer learners to other provision.

Professional Training

The Professional Training project delivered customised, personalised learning for the benefit of learners and their employer.  Training was offered at levels 3, 4 and 5 and aligned to core training provision at these levels, particularly Foundation Degrees.  The significant focus of this project was leadership and management skills.

The project delivered its agreed outputs and supported learners with their higher level skills development in Leadership & Management.

Pre Entry Luton

The Pre Entry Luton project targeted potential beneficiaries who had not undertaken formal learning within the last 3 years and who were below a level 2 qualification.  Pre Entry provided first steps, 1:1 and IAG to provide tailored, bespoke learning solutions that best meet the learner need.  Progression was encouraged and aligned to mainstream where appropriate.

Partners within this project worked well to achieve their targets with some partners asking for additional funding to provide extra provision for more participants.

Redundancy

The Redundancy Support programme worked to minimise the individual and local economic impact of redundancies by proactively identifying redundancy situations and working with ‘at risk’ employers.  Redundancy delivered short accredited and non accredited programmes to help support those who are/will be made redundant.

Pre Entry Bedfordshire

The Pre Entry Bedfordshire project enabled adults in deprived communities to access learning opportunities through engagement and first steps provision.  These workshops were focussed on sector skills areas such as ICT, construction and leisure and lead opportunities for formal training, full level 2 qualifications, volunteering, work experience and employment.

Voluntary Sector Skills

Voluntary Sector Skills provided a series of training opportunities for the voluntary and community sector.  There were a number of courses available such as IT, Leadership & Management and H&S delivered throughout Bedfordshire and Luton.

CVS more than met the required outputs for the project and were able to assist many voluntary sector organisations/participants.

Migrant Workers: Transqual

Transqual targeted members of the community who had studied and achieved qualifications overseas.  Using the NARIC databases and support from a dedicated team, qualified advisors assessed and compared the value of qualifications held by those engaged into UK equivalents.  07-08 piloted a ‘Living and Working in the UK course aimed specifically at migrant workers from eastern Europe that assisted them to develop basic English language skills through the provision of a series of 12 language lessons and information sessions covering employment rights and responsibilities, the UK legal system, dealing with financial matters and the UK education system.

This project was extremely successful with high numbers of beneficiaries helped to compare their overseas qualifications into UK equivalents therefore realising their full potential to progress into further learning and to source employment geared towards their skill level.

The Living and Working in the UK courses were extremely successful and very well attended both in Bedford and Luton.

This project commenced this month and it’s task group have met to discuss design, accessibility, links with other providers websites and how it can support new start-up businesses.
