Funding Support for BME Learning Activities

Funded by The Learning Skills Council, the project provides an information and advice service to assist BME groups to secure additional funding for projects around learning.

The project began in March 2006, working with 20 organisations in Luton and Bedfordshire. My role as project worker is to support volunteers in BME organisations to:

  • Plan and develop learning projects to support existing areas of work and develop new initiatives for sustainability
  • Identify potential funding streams using  Grant-finder software and through local funding networks
  • Prepare and complete funding applications to local and national funding bodies
  • Provide advice on available training opportunities both locally and regionally
  • Provide expertise in project management, setting up financial systems and governance issues

A large part of my role has been signposting organisations to other BME voluntary sector partners to develop their ideas for projects and help to prepare collaborative funding applications.
Networking with capacity building projects (such as The Luton Dunstable Partnership) and other organisations the project has secured
almost £3/4million of funding to support learning activities across Luton and Bedford for 17 BME voluntary groups.   Some of our successes to date are:

  • 4 groups secured funding from Awards for All
  • 4 pre-proposals accepted by Reaching Communities
  • 2 groups have received funding from WREN
  • A collaborative project between The Bedford African Caribbean Forum and Nyabingi Luton
  • Community Funding Initiative (CFI) awarded to 4 organisations in Luton
