West Suffolk College is a rural further education college helping local companies upgrade workforce skills, offering compliance training and Continuing Professional Development.
West Suffolk College was judged Outstanding in many areas by OFSTED Inspectors who visited the College in May 2010. Health and Social Care, Construction, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, Governance and Financial Management were graded Outstanding, and Visual Arts and Media were graded as Good with many outstanding features.
The College is the only college in the country to be awarded an Outstanding grade for Construction in nine and a half years of inspections.
The establishment was the first training provider in the country to achieve the Training Quality Standard (TQS) for excellence in seven areas of provision. A recent investigation into the socioeconomic impact of the College has identified £193.2 million benefit to the region.
With its main campus located in Bury St Edmunds, the College serves the rural community through Local Learning Centres in Haverhill, Ipswich, Mildenhall, Stowmarket and Sudbury. The Haverhill, Mildenhall, Stowmarket and Sudbury centres are also designated LEAP centres. Over a hundred different venues around the county are used to deliver programmes.
In addition to full-time, part-time and Adult Education student enrolment, the College has a large contract for Apprenticeships and Train to Gain Provision. In support of these programmes the College works with more than 1,200 employers and in 2009/10 delivered a substantial volume of full cost courses to employers.
West Suffolk College is a member of University Campus Suffolk and provides full and part-time degree courses for around 771 students. The annual graduation is held in the Cathedral, and is a very important day for students and the town alike.
