The purpose of this project is to map the existing qualifications of migrant workers in the East of England to ensure that their skills and previous qualifications are appropriate for their employment intentions in the UK. The qualification conversion project will provide a specialist information and advice service to migrant workers from the European Union and BME migrants from Africa, Asia and the rest of the World recently entering the UK and coming to work in the East of England. Key sectors will include construction, health and social care, hospitality, logistics and retail. Other important sectors where migrants are employed in the region include land based, food and drink and sport and leisure. In all cases the target will be economic migrants with a right of residence or leave to remain in the UK.
The project will offer an intial interview to assess the level of duties within the client’s current role, and collect information on the qualifications they hold from outside of the UK. Qualifications will be compared to the suite of databases held by UK NARIC to assess the UK equivalent and a local letter of comparison issued. This will be followed by a further IAG session to discuss possible progression, and assistance with approaching the client’s employer with this information. Assitance will be provided where possible to progress clients on to higher skill levels.
The impact of the qualification conversion project will be measured according to the number of migrants who change the contribution they make in their existing employment and by the numbers who access training services to secure a relevant UK qualification. Impact will be tracked to give a “before” and “after” record so that a precise quantifiable figure on impact can be provided. The project will provide accurate, relevant data on the skills base, training needs and aspirations of migrant workers.
